Men – Listen to Women!

1 May 2021 by Andrew Barrie Uncategorized 0 comments

I’m going to spend a little time talking about how men can learn more about style from women. I’m sure some women will be saying – yes, it’s about time.

I always take notice of women’s style, not just because it’s interesting in itself, but because women’s style has lessons for men. I’m always talking to women about style because I know they have an inherent understanding of style that is often lost on men.

This is what Miles Davis said:

‘[My mother] was a very glamorous woman who was into all kinds of hats and things, and all my mother’s friends just seemed as glamorous to me as she was. She always dressed to kill. I got my looks from my mother and also my love of clothes and sense of style.’

1. Shoes Matter

Men like to joke about the supposed obsession of women with shoes. Whether it’s shoes by Prada, Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin or some lesser light, men always seem to see the Imelda Marcos factor at work. They often see shoes as something only women need care about. How wrong they are.

The legendary Esquire columnist George Frazier was spot on when he said:

‘Wanna know if a guy is well dressed? Look down.’

I pay attention to the shoes I wear and over 90% of the times I receive a compliment, it’s from a woman. What men don’t understand is that when a woman looks at a man for the first time she nearly always gives him a very quick look up and down, including his shoes. It doesn’t matter whether this is in a casual, social or business setting. Men simply fail to understand the mistake they make when they aren’t wearing good, well-maintained shoes.

2. Accessories are fabulous

We are all familiar with women’s use of accessories such as handbags, shoes, scarves, necklaces and earrings. These enliven clothes and the same clothes worn with different accessories create a new outfit. The same can be true for men.

However, it’s only true if men give some thought to their accessories and don’t simply throw an outfit together. There are many accessories for men, including ties, pocket squares, cufflinks and jewellery.

A tie and pocket square which are complementary will lift an outfit. The Italians, in particular, are masters at this.

Cufflinks, worn with the flair of French cuffs, will add a little elegance. Not surprisingly, lovers of cufflinks call them miniature works of art.

3. Mix and match

This principle applies to all sorts of items, from clothing to accessories. For women it may be a different scarf and handbag worn with the same outfit or it may be the variation of a jacket in an outfit. The variation of patterns can have the same effect.

For men the same principles apply. Similar colours in a shirt and tie with different patterns can create an interesting effect.

Even a variation in humble items like socks can produce surprisingly effective results.

4. Embrace犀利士
vintage

Women have long been lovers of second-hand and opportunity shops (or thrift shops as they are known in the US). Here they can buy vintage or second-hand items, often at a fraction of the cost of new ones.

Men have been much slower to catch on to what women have known for years. But there are plenty of bargains and interesting items in these shops. A second-hand mall near me has the sign ‘Find what you’re not looking for.’ These shops have the fun of serendipity and lucky dip. You never know what you might find and if you come away with a stylish item at a bargain price you’ll be delighted.

5. Yes, style is really important

When a woman goes out for the day or the evening, she pays attention to her appearance. Men, however, are more likely to go out without giving real thought to their appearance and style. It’s most important to think about style and, even if you are informal, there’s a vast difference between casual and careless.

Till next time,

have a stylish day,

Andrew.
