Our first Man of Style is the acclaimed fashion designer Tom Ford, who though he has designed mainly for women, is a designer of men’s clothing and style icon in his own right.

e forefront of style, he doesn’t actually come from a clothing background. Improbably, he was born in Austin, Texas – hardly a place you’d associate with high style. In early life he studied art history at university, before dropping out and appearing in television commercials. He has studied fashion, but actually graduated in architecture. His CV includes terms as Creative Director for both Gucci and Yves St. Laurent. He made a huge improvement to the financial position of both companies and now has his own label.
His interests go well beyond the world of fashion and he’s a well – regarded film director, having directed the acclaimed films A Single Man and Nocturnal Animals.
If you’ve seen Daniel Craig in the James Bond films, he’s wearing outfits designed by Tom Ford.
Craig continues the tradition of impeccable Bond tailoring that began with Sean Connery.
Here’s Tom Ford in two of his simple, classic outfits.
So what’s different about him? You might say ‘a suit is a suit is a suit. ‘ You see suits everywhere, every day. So what’s so special or different about these?
Well, unlike suits worn by many men, these actually fit. Look at the shoulders. The cloth meets the join of the shoulder and the arm perfectly. Look at the bottom of the sleeve. The length is just right so that the right amount of shirt cuff shows under the suit jacket. Look at where the shirt collar shows above the suit jacket. The collar is clearly visible – all the way around the neck. This is because the suit jacket has been designed and fitted properly.
Tom Ford is a master of style because he understands the power of simple, impeccable tailoring.
