Miles of Style

1 May 2021 by Andrew Barrie Uncategorized 0 comments

Miles Davis was described by Rolling Stone magazine as ‘the most revered jazz trumpeter of all time.’ His Kind of Blue is the best-selling jazz album. He was also one of the most stylish men.

Davis was born into an affluent family and began to play and study music at an early age. He played with, and learned from, many of the great jazz musicians. In addition to being a magnificent  trumpeter, he was also a band leader and composer.

At an early age he was taught to play without vibrato, and that technical training helped his unique cool style. Even though he dropped out of the Juilliard School to play with jazz groups, he acknowledged the school for teaching him music theory and improving his technique.

His life was not without its ups and downs, however. Like quite a few jazz musicians, he had an addiction to heroin. He also used cocaine and abused alcohol. When low on funds during his days of addiction, he was not above pimping prostitutes to help pay for drugs.

One time he even locked himself in his father’s guest house for a week to go through withdrawal. Beating the drug habit took at least five years, but the dedication of boxer Sugar Ray Robinson inspired him to join a gym, become fit and stay away from drugs.

Style was central to his personality and his professional image. Acknowledging the debt he owed his mother for his style sense, he said:

‘She was a very glamorous woman who was into all kinds of hats and things, and all my mother’s friends seemed just as glamorous to me as she was. She always dressed to kill. I got my looks from my mother and also my love of clothes and sense of style.’

He dressed in many styles and was beautifully turned out. Apart from his innate sense of style, he recognised that stylish presentation helped him in his profession. Band members took a cue from him and lifted their sartorial game.

What can we learn from Miles Davis?

  1. Style sets you apart.

  2. Discipline helps you overcome setbacks and weaknesses.

  3. Style is a sign of professionalism.

  4. Get in shape. You’ll look and feel better.

Till next time,

have a stylish day,

Andrew.
